September brings a big change for children’s feet. After the summer holidays, they’re back in their school slippers for up to 8 hours a day. It’s warm in the classroom, they run about during break times, and in the afternoon there’s after-school care or clubs. Unsuitable socks can bunch up, pinch the toes and trap moisture. This results in discomfort, pressure marks and an unpleasant odour when they take their shoes off.
Well-chosen children’s school socks must last the whole day, not just the morning journey to class. The material, thickness and fit are all crucial.
Which material is right for your child?
There is no single ‘best’ material. It depends on your child’s needs – whether their feet tend to get sweaty, they have sensitive skin, they often feel the cold, or you’re looking for socks for everyday wear.
Cotton and organic cotton are soft to the touch and absorb moisture well. They’re ideal for everyday wear, whether at school or during leisure time. The VoXX range includes lightweight, breathable styles as well as socks made from organic cotton. If your child’s feet sweat a lot, look out for breathable zones and functional blends that help wick moisture away from the skin.
Bamboo viscose is exceptionally soft and gentle on the skin. It manages moisture well and is a suitable choice for children who appreciate soft and comfortable socks. For example, even for those with sensitive skin.
Merino wool helps regulate temperature and wick away moisture. And it’s certainly not just for the snow. Lighter merino socks are ideal, for instance, for a chilly walk to school, in a less well-heated classroom, or for children who often feel the cold in their feet.
SilproX® with silver ions helps wick away moisture and, thanks to the silver ions, reduces the growth of odour-causing bacteria. They are particularly suitable for active children, those who sweat a lot, or on long days when school is followed by an after-school club or training session.

Which details make all the difference when it comes to comfort?
The material is just one aspect of the choice. Equally important is the sock’s construction and how it sits inside the shoe. It is often the small details that determine whether a sock will remain comfortable for a child throughout the day.
The chained spike toe creates a smoother seam in the toe area, so it causes less pressure and chafing when walking. It is particularly suitable for children who are sensitive to prominent seams.
These extra-comfortable socks feature details designed specifically for comfort – such as a gentle cuff, a soft terry-cloth sole or a smooth toe. They are ideal for all-day wear at school and for children who often find standard socks uncomfortable.
Anatomically shaped socks are designed to distinguish between the left and right foot. They better follow the foot’s natural shape, which means they fit more securely in the shoe and are less likely to bunch up.
For wider slippers or barefoot shoes, choose socks with a barefoot fit. The extra space in the toe area prevents the toes from being unnecessarily squeezed together and helps to maintain the freedom of movement that barefoot footwear offers.
If you’re primarily concerned about sweating and odour, take a look at our range of antibacterial children’s socks. You can choose from styles made with bamboo viscose, merino wool or fibres containing silver ions, for example.
When choosing socks, also bear in mind the correct size and fit. A sock that is too small may constrict the toes and cause uncomfortable pressure, whilst one that is too large may bunch up inside the slippers. A well-fitting sock should stay in place without being too tight, not slip down, and at the same time not restrict the child’s movement in any way. For all-day wear at school, it’s also worth checking the cuff; it should hold the sock securely in place but shouldn’t dig into the skin.
Comfort for the whole school day
The ideal children’s socks for school combine the right material, a well-thought-out design and the correct size. For some, lightweight cotton will be best; for others, soft bamboo, warm merino or a functional material for better moisture-wicking. Add to that a comfortable toe, a suitable cuff and a cut that works well with indoor shoes, and your child’s feet will be well looked after from the first lesson right through to the final bell.
