1. Do wool socks have to be thick?
No. Wool describes the material, not how thick the socks are. Wool yarn can be knitted into both lightweight and thick fabrics. So, seeing the word “merino” on a label doesn’t tell you how much room the socks will take up in your shoes.
Take VoXX OPTIMUS thin merino socks, for example. They feature a soft cuff that doesn’t dig in, a reinforced sole and a smoothly linked toe. They’re a good example of how wool socks can be lightweight enough for everyday wear.
When choosing socks, consider how thick the knit is and how much room you have in your shoes. Your toes should have enough space to move, and the socks should stay in place without bunching up.
2. Is merino different from sheep’s wool?
Merino is a type of sheep’s wool. It comes from Merino sheep and is commonly used in performance socks and clothing. “Sheep’s wool” is the broader term, while “merino” refers to wool from a specific breed.
So, don’t think of sheep’s wool and merino as two completely different materials. You might see “merino” in a product description, while the composition label simply lists WO – wool.
3. Why aren’t wool socks always made from 100% wool?
Wool is often blended with other fibres to combine their different benefits. Elastane adds stretch, polyamide helps improve durability, and other fibres can help manage moisture.
For example, VoXX OPTIMUS socks contain 45% wool, 40% polypropylene, 10% polyamide and 5% elastane. Each fibre contributes to the finished product.
A blend isn’t necessarily a drawback. The important thing is to choose socks whose materials and design suit the activities you have in mind.
4. Does a higher wool content automatically mean better socks?
Not necessarily. The percentage of wool alone doesn’t tell you which socks will suit you best. It shows how much of the fibre blend is wool, but it doesn’t tell you how thick the knit is, how the sole is designed or how the socks will fit in your shoes.
VoXX ORIONIS contain 24% wool and combine merino with ThermoCool® and silproX® materials. They’re designed as thin socks, with a soft cuff and a smoothly linked toe.
By contrast, VoXX TWARIX contain 68% wool and feature a reinforced sole with terry zones for extra cushioning. The two styles differ in more than just their wool content: their design and construction matter too.
5. Can two pairs of merino socks feel different?
Yes. The feel of a sock depends on more than the type of wool it contains. Details such as the cuff, toe seam, sole reinforcement and fit can all affect comfort.
TWARIX socks feature terry zones and a breathable elasticated section over the instep to help keep them in place and prevent twisting. OPTIMUS, on the other hand, has a lightweight design and a reinforced sole.
Before buying, check both the product description and the photos. Two pairs labelled “merino” can feel quite different on your feet.
6. Should all wool socks be washed the same way?
Always follow the care instructions for the specific pair. Wool socks can contain different fibre blends and have different constructions, so the word “wool” alone doesn’t tell you how to wash them.
Before washing your new socks, check the recommended temperature, washing programme and drying instructions. Following the manufacturer’s guidance will help you look after them properly.
Choose the Whole Sock, Not Just the Label
When choosing wool socks, look beyond the label. Consider the fibre blend, thickness, cushioning, cuff and toe construction. Together, these features can help you find a pair that works well with your favourite shoes and everyday activities.
